Roses have been used as symbols in the UK. Yorkshire and Lancashire are represented by different colour roses and there's fierce rivalry between the counties. The red rose represents the House of Lancaster and the white rose the House of York. This dates back to about the fourteenth century and is said to be a religious symbol with reference to the Virgin Mary, who was often called the Mystical Rose of Heaven. The War of the Roses was ended by Henry VII who created the Tudor Rose as a symbol combining the two.
